Federal tax credits for windows and doors have been extended through 2011 - with some significant changes.

Qualifying Products:

Windows and exterior doors that comply with Energy Star requirements in your region (Find your ENERGY STAR climate zone) are eligible for the tax credit. Products must be installed in the consumer's existing primary residence. New construction is not eligible.

Credit Amount:

For qualifying windows and doors installed between January 1 and December 31, 2011:

  • Windows may qualify for a tax credit of 10% with a cap of $200
  • Exterior doors may qualify for a tax credit of 10% with a cap of $500

Lifetime Cap:

The new law sets a lifetime limit of $500.00 in tax credits for qualifying purchases made between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2011. This is not in addition to the $1500.00 limit that was in place for 2009-2010. If you have already reached or exceeded the $500.00 limit, you are not eligible to claim the credit in 2011. The $500.00 aggregate lifetime limit is for any combination of tax credit qualifying products (HVAC, insulation, roofing, ect.), not just windows and doors. If you have claimed less than $500, you can claim the difference up to the $200 cap for windows and $500 cap for exterior doors.

How to claim your tax credit:
  1. Purchase qualifying windows and/or exterior doors
  2. Retain your receipts showing the cost of qualifying products (keep with your tax material)
  3. Save the NFRC labels from each window or door (keep with your tax material)
  4. Download your Manufacturer's Certification Statement (keep with your tax material)
  5. Submit the claim with your taxes for the year your windows and/or doors were installed
  6. Consult your tax advisor. The tax credit for windows and doors has a few new rules that may restrict eligibility depending on previous tax claims for windows and doors.

This information is provided as a convenience to the consumer. It is not a complete description of the requirements to obtain the tax credit and is not a substitute for professional tax advice. Sierra Pacific Windows expressly disclaims any responsibility or liability for the homeowner’s ability to obtain tax credits. Always consult your tax advisor.

Sierra Pacific's unique approach to building and selling quality windows and doors begins with the trees.
